Cumbria Youth Alliance was set up in 1997 to provide services young people across Cumbria. We work in all 6 localities across Cumbria. We have over 150 member organisations who input into our strategic planning process ensuring we meet the current and emerging needs across the County. We are a small team of 5 full time and 4 part time staff ably led by 9 local trustees recruited from within the local communities we serve.

Our mission statement is “To ensure all young people in Cumbria reach their full potential”.

We do this in two ways;: we directly deliver services to over 2500 young people per annum and also support over 200 agencies who are delivering to young people here in Cumbria. Our current portfolio includes:

For Young People:

Our portfolio is driven by the needs of young people with a focus on young people in the most deprived communities where our work has the impact to make a real difference to young people’s lives: We do this through

  • Delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme supporting over 100 young people here in Cumbria as well as supporting other agencies to pass their participants through this service
  • Work with young people who are not in employment, education or training using either sport or social action as the engagement tool to develop customised programmes with training and support to help them into work or back to education
  • Delivery of a range of financial and entrepreneurial skills programmes to young people in schools, youth clubs and other settings including working with young people with learning difficulties. We are in partnership with Mybnk a London based charity to deliver this work and locally work in close partnership with Allerdale Credit Union
  • We deliver a range of peer led health programmes focussing on the issues important to young people here in Cumbria such as Tobacco Awareness, Drugs ,Alcohol, Staying Safe, Understanding Risk Taking and Looking after your Emotional Wellbeing – this programme also trains young people as peer researchers and peer educators and they can undertake commissioned work for a range of agencies including NHS Cumbria
  • Delivery of a Democracy Project enabling young people to understand how to use their voice to influence policy and practice.

For other agencies:

We hold a contract with Cumbria County Council to provide advice, support training and guidance to groups who are working with young people aged 11 or over: This includes:

  • Access to support for fundraising – identification of funding sources; checking bids and providing information to strengthen your bids
  • Training for staff and volunteers through a needs led programme of 4 day volunteer training programmes and one day staff and volunteer programmes run across the County
  • Access to Support to recruit and train trustees: customised training delivered at a time and place to suit the needs of the agencies that use the service
  • Information: provision of a monthly newsletter and a monthly funding journal and weekly ebulletins so that people can make informed choices – also downloadable resources
  • Organisational Needs Analysis and Training Needs Analysis with resulting action plans for organisations and teams to keep pace with current and emerging picture
  • Gain a Quality System: we support agencies to gain a quality system such as Safe Quality Protects at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.
