Overview of service........

We feed people in crisis nutritonally balanced food for up to three days. People are given vouchers and collect food from one of our Foodbank centres. They can receive up to three vouchers within a crisis.

We use over 125 voucher holders made up of advice workers, statutory workers, statutory agencies/churches and health professionals. The voucher holders cover a wide range of advice and support services who signpost clients to us for food. The voucher holders look after any long term crisis, we look after the short term crisis.

Our Mission is simple………

The North Lakes Foodbank is a community-based project providing food for people in crisis throughout Allerdale and Copeland. It was seeded by the Trussell Trust, a Christian based organisation, committed to launching life changing community-based projects.

The North Lakes Foodbank helps individuals and families in crisis, through the provision of emergency food supplies. All food is given to people in crisis identified by care professionals – Health Visitors, Doctors, Social Workers, Church and Community Workers. These distributors give out vouchers which are exchanged for the food which is nutritionally balanced to last the individual, couple or family 3 days. We are signing up more distributors daily. The amount of people throughout Allerdale and Copeland we are feeding each month is growing rapidly. Some of the needs are as a result of benefit delay, low income and housing issues.

We collect food from customers at supermarkets, churches, schools and through local groups. We see food as a catalyst for change by providing emergency food immediately to meet a crisis situation with some practical help while Care Professionals look at longer-term strategies.

We give out shopping lists for people to buy items of food from. The non-perishable food is handed in to collections points at Churches, schools or at supermarket collections. Food can also be taken straight to our Foodbank centres (apart from our Workington Centre). At all of our 6 centres, the food is given out to clients who are offered a hot drink, a biscuit and a friendly chat. Here clients will be signposted to agencies to help further with their requirements. At our Egremont, Maryport and Wigton centres we have an advice worker who joins us during the foodbank session. They are there to help clients with low income, debt and housing advice, they can also, if appropriate, issue a voucher for the client.

We opened our doors in early November 2009 not knowing that we would be needed so urgently after the Floods happened as a key part of the Cockermouth Flood Action Response. Our vision now is to make the Foodbank accessible to all those in need across the whole of Allerdale and Copeland.

“Local People Helping Their Neighbours In Crisis”

How do I refer to this organisation?

If you are working alongside a client and you are not signed up as a voucher holder with us do get in touch. If a person comes into the Food Bank without a voucher we will refer onto the correct agency for their crisis.

Areas of Advice

We use over 125 voucher holders who cover a range of advice and support organisations and signpost to us for food. The agencies look after long term crisis, we look after short term crisis.
