Quality is at the heart of everything we do. We are constantly striving to maintain our professionalism and expertise as legal advisers, and to raise standards too.

Through the Cumbria Advice Network, voluntary sector advisors are joining hands across the county to provide consistently high quality service to our clients, by sharing skills, addressing gaps in local provision, rural exclusion and so on.

We have completed an initial training needs analysis to map our skills and expertise across Cumbria. This has enabled us to devise a training programme that will be of real use to members, reflecting the training needs they themselves have identified. Our training programme is bringing nationally acclaimed legal experts to Cumbria, and little or no cost to CAN members, providing locally a standard of training that is not ‘as good as what you can get in Manchester or London’ but better still.

Our training events will not only equip people with high level training, but will enable local advisers to network with each other, extending their local knowledge of what else is available in the county, and encouraging local circles of discussion, debate and mutual support.

Our forthcoming training programme is now available.

Quality Marking. The times are changing, but the Legal Services Commission’s specialist quality mark and audit regime remain currently the dominant pressure on legal practices and advice agencies working in social welfare law. We are helping members keep up with the latest LSC requirements, as well as keeping an eye on the work being done by CitA and the Advice Services Alliance nationally to develop a robust quality mark that we can own as a sector independently.

The ambition of the CAN project is to ensure a consistency of quality and provision across this enormous and often far-flung, rurally isolated county of people. This can be realistically achieved by pooling expertise wherever possible, making continuous efforts to maintain our awareness of what each of us is doing, and working together for the good of our clients.
